Am I the only one a little bothered by Dumbledore? Not only with the fact he could end up in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Most Incompetent Headmaster of All Time" (though I'm sure there's worse. :P), but also because...he just bugs me. I know JKR was trying to write him as the "flawed Yoda", so to speak (and to be fair, he's nowhere near Yoda. XD), but it's also how...preachy he gets. Towards Fudge, for example. You know, in Goblet of Fire, with, "You place too much importance on purity of blood, yadda yadda et cetera et cetera" -- which considering how he treated Tom Riddle and the Slytherins is...slightly hypocritical isn't it? Probably bad writing on JKR's part, though. :/

Anyways, sorry 'bout the rambling. Thoughts?

I know, right? It definitely adds a degree of Fridge Horror on top of that -- Dumbledore's kind of manipulating Harry the way he is because he hasn't really gotten over the...Grindelwald thing. (Sorry if I'm mentioning it too much, BTW. :) Sort of an, "If I can't be loved, no one will!" thing. Pretty scary. :/

I wish JKR had explored it a little more. It would definitely be more chilling and tragic than a simple He Got Better after nearly trying to take over the world with his old friend/lover. (Tragic for Grindelwald as well, because I think he genuinely loved Dumbles...even if he didn't really realize it until the end. /is a tad sentimental. :)

Seriously, though, I can picture Anakin putting on the Barenaked Ladies during the "King's Cross" chapter:

ANAKIN: Oh, juma...I drink to your health.

OBI-WAN: I haven't seen you this traumatized since we saw LOVE AMONGST THE GUNGANS.

ANAKIN: Shaddit, Obi-Wan...

Yoda was at least well intentioned and he did care for the younglings. Yoda was rarely deliberatly manipultive. He did what he thought best within his knowledge what was best.

I didn't exactly like the idea of him and Obi-Wan setting Luke up to kill Vader, but maybe they saw it as kind of a Shoot the Dog moment. (Maybe Obi-Wan semi-atoning for leaving Anakin to die? Funny how most of Obi-Wan's decisions keep coming back to his love for Anakin...*contemplative*)

And I agree regarding Yoda caring for the younglings. I definitely know the scene when he and Obi-Wan see what happened at the Temple in the ROTS book had me in tears. :(

The thing with all the Jedi too is that a lot of their mistakes can be attributed to them all being raised since birth in the Jedi Temple with only other Jedi around. The know how other people work well enough to do diplomatic stuff, but on a fundamental level probably just don't get Anakin, and so can't recognize a lot of the warning signs or figure out how to help. And while I find the idea of them teaching kids to use lightsabers in AotC while knowing that (given the state of the galaxy) those kids will probably end up using them for real someday very sad and a little creepy, it's also the only way to grow up they've known themselves, so they mean well, and they mean it for the good of the galaxy.

It's very sad, really. As much as I want to kick the Jedi sometimes, they're also like a big collective tragic hero doomed by their fatal flaws.

I personally teared up at "Master Yoda -- it's the Troll", as well as earlier with the implied You Shall Not Pass the younglings pulled on the clone troopers and Anakin. *Sniff* :(

And yes...it really was about Obi-Wan being filled with remorse. :(
