Am I the only one a little bothered by Dumbledore? Not only with the fact he could end up in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Most Incompetent Headmaster of All Time" (though I'm sure there's worse. :P), but also because...he just bugs me. I know JKR was trying to write him as the "flawed Yoda", so to speak (and to be fair, he's nowhere near Yoda. XD), but it's also how...preachy he gets. Towards Fudge, for example. You know, in Goblet of Fire, with, "You place too much importance on purity of blood, yadda yadda et cetera et cetera" -- which considering how he treated Tom Riddle and the Slytherins is...slightly hypocritical isn't it? Probably bad writing on JKR's part, though. :/

Anyways, sorry 'bout the rambling. Thoughts?

I would like to believe better of him, especially since there's already so many things he definitely did that weren't so great... but he makes it so easy to suspect him!

He quite blatantly uses guilt-trips to keep Snape in the program, even after Snape doesn't want to do it anymore by HBP. And he didn't think it would be just fine to let Snape get a researcher's position at St. Mungo's or some potioneering firm while still being Dumbledore's Man. (Why wouldn't that be useful to D, anyway? He has agents among the Aurors and other Ministry departments, why not the hospital or R&D? Snape could pass that off to Voldemort as whoops, he was on to me so I had to get a position where I wouldn't be looking him in the eye all the time (underplaying his Occlumancy abilities to V couldn't hurt), but we're still in contact so I can keep an eye on him so whenever you give the word... plus, uh, I've been using my position to, er, figure out how to bring you back. Yeah.) So it isn't too much of a leap to him consciously not wanting Snape to move on :(

Oh yes. His whole thing with Snape is all about keeping the latter disempowered and therefore easy to manipulate.

There's a very well-written but quite horrifying fanfic (http://www.amanuensis1.com/sovay.html) by amanuensis about how far Dumbles might be willing to go to make sure that Severus is loyal to him. I recommend it, but only if you have an iron stomach. It's a 'read once and never forget' fic. Definitely not friendly to Dumbles. Yet somehow I could just about buy it.
