Am I the only one a little bothered by Dumbledore? Not only with the fact he could end up in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Most Incompetent Headmaster of All Time" (though I'm sure there's worse. :P), but also because...he just bugs me. I know JKR was trying to write him as the "flawed Yoda", so to speak (and to be fair, he's nowhere near Yoda. XD), but it's also how...preachy he gets. Towards Fudge, for example. You know, in Goblet of Fire, with, "You place too much importance on purity of blood, yadda yadda et cetera et cetera" -- which considering how he treated Tom Riddle and the Slytherins is...slightly hypocritical isn't it? Probably bad writing on JKR's part, though. :/

Anyways, sorry 'bout the rambling. Thoughts?

So how then was it any different in principle from Dumbledore and Grindelwald's ideas about how wizards ruling muggles was necessary because it was for the muggles' own good ie 'the Greater Good'?

I don't know how old you are, but for those of use who were kids-teenagers in the 1990s there was a great kids cartoon called Gargoyles, during the introduction of which, the main character actually requested to be turn to stone by a magician because of his sense of despair and isolation at apparently being the last specimen surviving of his kind.

If Hermione's parents had requested to be mind wiped out of despair at the situation and estrangement from their daughter then it would have been so much more poignant and so much less horrifying than the filth JKR actually presented us with.

I haven't watched GARGOYLES, but I saw the Nostalgia Critic's review of it and really got interested. :) *Should see it, for Christ's sake* XD

Do so. It (and Batman: The Animated Series) are pretty much the 90s predecessors to AtLA. Just ignore the third season (even the creator does).

You're so right! The most annoying thing about the series is that it could be amazing if a lot of things were just thought through. And if JKR could actually sympathize with the non *speshul* people.

Oh yes. I admit that I am something of a fan of Hermione, but she is quite ruthless, and the mind-wiping her parents thing just OMG so wrong. (I find her interesting because of her ruthlessness, actually). She's the next Dark Lord (Lady?), definitely. So very righteous.

I forget if I recc'd this to you before, but for a dose of well-written ruthless!Hermione try Caveat Inimici over at FF.net.

I wish more people would recognize her ruthless side. I am a fan of hers, but it's a 'warts and all' love, I call her out on the despicable things she does as much (even more since I started commenting here!) as I praise the good things. And it frustrates me no end in fics where she turns into Hermione Sue, just full of grace and compassion and selflessness to all. No, this is reserved for a very select group of people, mainly Harry and Ron, and everyone else can screw themselves as far as she's concerned. Various Slytherins, Marietta, McClaggen, etc. The thing with her parents horrifies me, as much as do the people who justify it with very weak reasoning.
