Mar. 4th, 2011 12:36 pmAm I the only one a little bothered by Dumbledore? Not only with the fact he could end up in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Most Incompetent Headmaster of All Time" (though I'm sure there's worse. :P), but also because...he just bugs me. I know JKR was trying to write him as the "flawed Yoda", so to speak (and to be fair, he's nowhere near Yoda. XD), but it's also how...preachy he gets. Towards Fudge, for example. You know, in Goblet of Fire, with, "You place too much importance on purity of blood, yadda yadda et cetera et cetera" -- which considering how he treated Tom Riddle and the Slytherins is...slightly hypocritical isn't it? Probably bad writing on JKR's part, though. :/
Anyways, sorry 'bout the rambling. Thoughts?

Date: 2011-03-08 04:04 am (UTC)Let me not forget to mention that Bluestar has a mysterious, secret past that's very similar to Dumbledore's, involving forbidden love, betrayal, and the death of an innocent. Honestly, Rowling reminds me less of an author than she does those "musical artists" who do nothing but
rip off"sample" other people's music instead of writing something original.no subject

Date: 2011-03-09 02:20 pm (UTC)On the whole Stouffer/Rowling lawsuit...I didn't really hear about it that way. From what I heard, Stouffer ripped off Rowling (but you never really know. :/). I *did* hear, however, that the Potter fans bombarded the poor woman with hatemail. I mean, *come on*. Even if Stouffer *did* rip Rowling off, it's still an incredibly Fan Dumb thing to do. :/

"Terry Pratchett is often approached and mailed by 'fans' about 'how his Unseen University carries a remarkable resemblance to Hogwarts' with the clear indication that he somehow 'ripped off Rowling'. Pratchett replies to these ramblings of deluded minds: "Oh yes, I plagiarized Jo Rowlings. With the cunning use of a time-machine".
Grrr.... Some people!"
I know.
All I can say about Pterry is...well, good old Pterry. Not only is he infinitely superior to Rowling (then again *anything's* superior to Rowling, IMO. :P), but he definitely knows how to handle a crisis. Lord knows my response would probably be going green and talking in caveman for weeks. XP
XD
"When I watched the first Lord of the Rings movie, I clearly heard somebody behind me say: 'This movie is *such* a rip-off! That Gandalf fellow is just Obi Wan Kenobi in a fantasy setting.'"
They seriously did that?! *Grumbles about them needing to read the books, dammit* Besides, the old mentor archetype isn't new. *Cough* Hero's Journey *Cough*

I went to the LotR movies with my study buddies (I went to University at the ripe age of 36 back in 2001 and so I've got friends who are 15-18 years younger, which is lots of fun but sometimes also very weird). One of my study buddies was totally blown over by the Fellowship of the Rings and couldn't stop talking about it. So we chatted, and somewhere along the line I mentioned how long a wait it would be for us to see the second movie, and he went, "there's a sequel?", and we went, "Huh? It's a *trilogy*. Tolkien split up his book in three parts and the movie follows that format," and he went, "There's a BOOK?!" and we fell off our chairs.
The poor boy had never heard from Tolkien. (that has been rectified in the past ten years, of course :-)"
That's pretty awesome. :3
"Tolkien stealing from George Lucas. Oh yeah. Sure. *headdesk* *headdesk*"
XD
Seriously, one could definitely say it's the other way around.
And that last quote is just awesome beyond belief. XD
