Rowling seems to focus on what she thinks is cool way too much. If she would have simply wrote the damned story, she probably would not have so many O_O fails.
I think owls would be great messengers if they had some believable magical means for them to fly routes and be reasonably taken care of en route. But this owl system... and there is no course instruction for The Care of Your Owl: Thou shalt not have temper tantrums and take your anger out on your owl.

Seems like WW has a solid track record of animal abuse. Probably set up that way to show what a lover and champion of critters that Hagrid is...??? Or just that wizards are just plain asses anyways.
