It seems the trio argued about the events in the forest but were stuck with the same conclusion - either Crouch attacked Viktor and left or someone else attacked them both. Though Ron has a future posting on fan boards with the theories he can spin. Oh, Severus turned himself into a bat and beat Harry and Albus to the forest: Foreshadowing of Severus' flying, no doubt.

After writing to Sirius Hermione suggests they go see 'Moody'. As Harry says, with the Marauders' Map he could locate Crouch (which is what he did, but that was before he went ostensibly to look for him. The trio also overhear the twins discussing plans to blackmail someone. Wow, they were playing 'nice' with Ludo for 9 months? I am amazed.

"Don't let us hold you up" - is Fred a Discworld fan? He sounds almost like Vetinari's 'don't let me detain you'. And Ron is almost like Percy, not wanting his brothers to do illegal things. The fine family dynamics. It's not enough to ridicule Percy for being a law-abiding person, he also gets used to deter others from same. Ron might even become a prefect. (Like his cool brother Bill! And Charlie!)

Ron is concerned his brothers might get money illegally to start their business. Hermione doesn't think they'd go as far as that, but wonders if they might know something about Crouch's appearance and the attack on Viktor. Hard to say which of them thinks worse of those two. (And we know Hermione is already planning to blackmail Rita, if she only knew what about. She will do better than the twins - she will leave no written evidence. And since she will do it for Harry rather than money she is OK.)

After all these months Harry discarded his broken watch. One less item to dump out of his trunk in DH. When the kids go to 'Moody' he looks more lopsided than usual. Elkins suspects that he nearly missed the timing for his dose of Polyjuice (and that after killing his father he was beginning to lose it).

Of course Barty used the map. But he didn't find his father when Albus sent him to look for him because his father was already dead (and transfigured). 'Moody' commends Hermione for her analytical skills. She will be the only member of the trio not to take career advice from a Death Eater. 'Moody' shakes the kids off his tail by telling Ron and Hermione to help Harry prepare for the obstacles in the maze.

Hermione thinks the absence of a story by Rita about Crouch's appearance and disappearance at Hogwarts is a good sign. No, it's not. People could have used the warning. Harry receives an angry letter from Sirius warning him to watch out, avoid being out alone in the dark and prepare for the third task. Sirius must have really been concerned because his reply arrived within a day rather than after a delay of several weeks like some of his previous ones. (BTW contrast this with his attitude the following year, about danger being half the fun.) But just to keep Sirius at some level of risk-taking, after insisting the kids not address letters to him by his name, he signs it on his reply.

So why didn't Barty kidnap Harry from the forest? (Or just stun him, draw some of his blood and owl to Voldemort? Or stun him, transfigure him into a small animal and owl him to Voldemort?) Hermione doesn't understand it either - as Rowling's avatar she is essentially saying 'I know there is a plot hole here and I can't close it'.

Harry practices stunning Ron until the latter aches all over. Hermione says it's Ron fault, for not falling on the cushions. But she hastily avoids the role of Harry's guinea pig. Cowardly? Disloyal?

Divination is still about astrology. Still boring, still in an environment that does not support mental acuity. Sybil uses her wand to dim the lights! See, she could cast the occasional spell even before the Battle of Hogwarts. Since Harry opened the window a certain insect managed to make her way in. I wonder if she followed Harry around like that for months waiting for her opportunity. How many of the trio's discussions was she privy to that year?

Harry dozes off and dreams of flying on an eagle owl, just like the evil owl he saw a week or two earlier. We get a glimpse of the place that served as Tom's headquarters that year - an ivy covered house, high on a hillside, with a broken window in an upper story window. The description matches that of the Riddle House in chapter 1. Intuitively I thought Tom would stay in Crouch's home, so if anyone came to check on him he could make Crouch answer the door (and say the right things). But the broken window fits better with the Riddle House.

In any case, Tom is small enough to be hidden by the back of his chair, but substantial enough to hold a wand. (His own? Possibly. Just checked chapter 34, there are screams coming from the wand between Cedric's image and Frank Bryce's.) He will not feed Wormtail to Nagini for his lapse of letting Crouch escape. It's an empty threat, because at this point he needs Peter for his resurrection. But he might feed Harry to Nagini. (He will forget this plan in 3 years when AKing Harry with the Elder Wand in the forest fails.) Since Tom won't kill Peter, at least he can torture him a bit.

Once more, like in chapter 1, the scene is from a neutral POV. As opposed to all Harry's Voldievisions in the later 3 books, all of which are from Tom's POV.

Trelawney is right that Harry's experience was significant, but understandably Harry doesn't want to share it in class. (Sybil's phrasing is funny - yes, she has experience rolling on the floor, does she?)

Harry follows Sirius' advice and goes directly to Albus to report the pain in his scar. Next year he will refuse to do so, except when he dreams of Arthur's near-death.

OK, so Tom and Barty are communicating via eagle owl. I suppose when Harry saw it in the owlry in chapter 28 that was when Tom reported Crouch's escape?

Anyway, Harry is at Dumbly's gargoyles, trying to break through the security system, by listing all sweets he could think of until he accidentally hits on the correct one. Seems like more of a test of determination and patience than an actual security measure.

What we overhear from the conversation implies Fudge doesn't accept Albus' hypothesis that there is a connection between the disappearances of Bertha Jorkins and her former boss (and perhaps that this implies something even more sinister). Instead Fudge suspects Olympe had something to do with Crouch's disappearance. Because she is a half-giantess and the possible crime took place near her temporary residence.

Fortunately 'Moody' was there and could report Harry was outside the door.
