Race #1:
Antipodean Opaleye
A native of New Zealand (and occasionally Australia too) this is the prettiest and cutest dragon of the lot, with shiny pearly-white scales and multi-colored eyes that look like, well, opals. Conveniently, this very beautiful dragon is not particularly dangerous to humans (by dragon standards) since it mainly eats sheep and rarely kills unless it’s hungry. To really drive home the point that this dragon is ever-so-gentle it breathes red flame. Red flames are some of the least hot of all possible colored flames, with blue and white being the hottest (keep that in mind- it’ll come up again)- granted, this is Rowling we’re talking about, so it’s anybody’s guess whether she did that on purpose.
The book also goes on to state that “a spate of kangaroo killings in the late 1970s were attributed to a male Opaleye ousted from his homeland by a dominant female.” Every so often Rowling will pull a real date out of her ass to explain when a magical creature did something. I wonder if this is based on something that happened in real life. Does anyone know?
