Presumably one of the wards that Hermione cast was something that blocked post owls. Otherwise one could grab any magical owl and address a letter to 'Harry Potter'.
That self-firing wand was just a horrible horrible deus ex machina device. Rowling must be ashamed. Well, I can't conceive of any intelligent author not being so.
