This has always puzzled me. Not only Ginny started writing in the Diary after she tried to chuck it down a toilet to later rescue it from Harry's room, but she did it again after she was quite certain that something was shifty about it. No punishment, no talking-to, not even detention. Hot chocolate and a night at the Hospital Wing is all she got for that, O.o
I know--wtf?!! Especially knowing how judgmental Ginny II is going to be, you wonder why nobody ever throws this in her face.
Well, JKR needed some device to separate Harry from Ron. Lockhart was the perfect device, if not it'd have been incest if Ron had managed to get to his sister's Chamber with Harry.
