I finally caught up on the FB movies. There's some cool magic, a few other neat things (like Newt at least knowing what his monsters really want a lot of the time, unlike Hagrid), and lots of things that make you go, "But... but... wait...that doesn't... what?" Also the Nagini retcon makes Neville killing her in DH a lot less triumphant and a lot more really horrible now, which seems like a bad artistic choice. I'm sure I'll have a lot more to say about all that stuff at some point.

But the main thought today is that Dumbledore and Grindelwald's similar approaches in the second movie were fascinating. The movie was this close to admitting Dumbledore is a manipulative bastard. I'm sure he'll be thoroughly excused for all his failings by the fifth movie, but it's great for the moment.( Some spoilers )

Love in HP

Since Valentine's Day is close by, I thought this topic would be fitting to bring up ~~and ramble about until I get it off my chest.~~

Here comes a few (potentially) silly questions I have about love as a reoccurring and major theme in the HP books: is love a redemptive and saving force? Is it a reflection of our inner nature and morals? Does it make us better or worse than we are? Is it proof we’re capable of good? Or is it simply a nice message to have in a children’s series i.e. love is more powerful than anything?

If you read my newest fic "training," though, you'll see I agree, marianros, with the sentiment that Albus couldn't be trusted with love. What was it Aberforth said? "Funny thing, how many of the people my brother cared about very much ended up in a worse state than if he'd left 'em well alone."

And then it occurred to me: might that also be true of Gellert?

Harry sits there at dawn, continuing to wallow in the trauma of losing his wand. No matter what anybody says, wands have to be phallic symbols. Nothing else can explain Harry’s trauma; he acts like Hermione’s broken his penis instead of a stick he uses to channel his magic. After some of Harry’s physical injuries over the series have been recapped, we get this histrionic passage:

Deathly Hallows, Chapter 14: The Thief

When Harry comes to, he’s in some strange woods with Ron and Hermione. All three are changing back into themselves. Hermione is okay--of course, because the boys couldn’t survive without her--but Ron has Splinched. (I have to say, Rowling is very good at coming up with these silly sounding words.) With typical thoughtlessness, Harry has always considered Splinching a joke--until he sees his friend lying on the ground, gushing blood from a big chunk that’s been taken out of his arm.

Hermione puts Dittany on the wound to close it and explains how they got there: Yaxley grabbed onto her when they left, so when they landed, he was taken inside the Fidelius on 12GP. When she realized that, she Apparated them elsewhere to get away. She blames herself, but Harry both honorably and honestly says it’s his fault. See, Harry? I knew you should have Stunned Yaxley again before you took off.

The History of the Order of the Phoenix

A question that has been asked multiple times in DTCL and elsewhere is why Dumbledore formed the Order of the Phoenix during Vold War I. Why did he need to form an independent militia to fight against Voldemort's death eaters when, at the time, he had significant power within the Ministry of Magic and the Ministry was already fighting against Voldemort? Another question that I've been pondering is what role Arabella Figg played in the Order during the first war. Since both wars seem to have been fairly limited to the wizarding world, it's hard to imagine how Arabella, a squib, might have been involved before she began monitoring Harry in Little Whinging, yet Dumbledore named her in GoF as being part of the "old crowd."

But Terri's recent essays got me thinking... are we certain that Dumbledore founded the Order of the Phoenix in response to Voldemort, or is it possible that Dumbledore originally created it in order to fight Grindelwald? ( Read more... )
