A lot of fanon assumes that because Lucius, Severus, and Bellatrix are very important during the second war, they must have been so during the first. Lucius was especially trusted and valued because Voldemort gave him the diary and told him so much about it. Similarly, Bellatrix was exceptionally trusted and important because he told her all about the Horcrux he gave her to guard. Severus was important because he got assigned a special mission at Hogwarts. But does any of that that hold up? Not very well, in my opinion. )

Trying to finish this Indestructible project has set my mind going in so many different directions, I can’t even tell you. Have another tangent to chew on while I write up occlumency and the tower and cave.

One of the features of the HP books that becomes very noticeable once you start looking at them symbolically and examining the relationships between characters closely is how much the books are built on various kinds of pairings and reflections. It’s like Alice’s Looking-Glass in there: everything has a twin, an opposite, an echo, a (distorted) mirror-image. Sometimes things are absurdly literal, sometimes completely the opposite of what they seem. Or both at once.

Severus, of course, as the heart of the books and probably the single most complex character in them, has multiple pairings and twins of different sorts.

And it strikes me that Bellatrix is one of his most interesting reflections.

[For the attempted break-in of Gringotts, they decide Hermione will be Polyjuiced to look like Bellatrix]

Hermione: I really hate that I have to go as the woman who tortured me.

Harry: Well, look on the bright side—it’s only for one chapter.

Hermione: I can already tell it’s going to be a long chapter.

Hello! I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but since I came across the topic here, I thought it would be appropriate.

I was reading oryx_leucoryx's wonderful GoF chapter commentary and it was mentioned that Bellatrix/the Lestranges managed to talk their way out of Azkaban before attacking the Longbottoms. This is actually something I've come across before on various forums and when reading theories, but I can't find anything about it in the books. I tried looking for old interviews and it isn't mentioned there either as far as I can tell. So I was just wandering, how do you know this? I'd be very grateful if someone gave me a quote or something :)

Also, this is my first post here, so I'm sorry if I've made some grave error.
