Apparently, a new movie

I was just reading the newspaper, and saw that Warner Bros. is apparently going to be doing another movie in the Potterverse -- based on Fantastic Beasts, but they said something about a series.  JKR is going to be a screenwriter.

This should be... at least as, um, thought-provoking, as Pottermore.

Oh, yeah--I just heard about that.

Crap, I'm gonna have to find that book and finish doing my Fantastic Beasts profiles soon, before the movie comes out....

I am baffled as to how they can have a movie without a plot? Isn't a story of some kind a basic requirement, even for documentaries? Oh, I know! They'll make it the story of Newt Scamander's life and adventures! That could actually be kind of fun!

I'll be interested to see how they handle the Lethifold creepypasta, actually. I really hope they get to that, because it was one of the bits of the original book that most struck me.

Yeah, I've read that it features Newt Scamander as the main character and is set in the 1920's in New York.

New York? There had better be magical alligators in the sewers! That sounds... intriguing, actually.

Hm, we should make a list of characters who might be available for cameos (or larger roles). Horace Slughorn and the Dumbledore brothers were alive and could have gone on a New York holiday, or at least popped through the fire for a chat. Grindlewald, trying to drum up support for his European plans?

JKR really should talk to George Lucas about learning how to let your franchise go, though. "Take it from one who hung on a bit too tightly and too long..."

Sewer Gators! That was my thought, too! Though I also thought perhaps Newt was there because of King Kong? Wasn't that the '20s? Of course, there might be copyright issues with him - but I could see him as some form of Sasquatch or Yeti.....

Personally, I'm hoping she doesn't touch any of the known characters much. I'm feeling relieved that the time period means she wouldn't be doing many character rewrites. Tho' I suppose an invite from Sluggy for a party might be a nice touch - as long as Newt doesn't go to it.

I think if we get any familiar names, it is more likely to be in the form of invites, newspaper articles, and references like "did you hear what so-and-so has done now?" And probably some grandparents of characters we know, a Malfoy or a Black maybe. We know Great Uncle Algie picks up rare(?) plants from foreign parts, so maybe he and Newt went on a trip together at some point?

They won't need a plot. I see this as just an excuse to have a movie that is 95% LOTS! OF! SPECIAL! EFFECTS! Dragons like the ones in the GoF and DH films, etc. Who needs a plot? (Not the people who went to see the two DH films ... :-))

Yeah let's not drain that well dry...oh wait.

My daughter is excited because Rowling is writing it, 'so everything will be canon'. I expressed skepticism about Rowling's ability to be in any way consistent with her own canon.

That's interesting. I know the books are canon, the films aren't.

But a film with the canon 'owner'/author as scriptwriter?

It'll be more fun if Rowling!movies are accepted as canon, 'cause then all of the retcons and contradictions will be way more fun!

We also don't know if Rowling's any good at making movies. Just because she knew how to write books doesn't mean that's automatically going to translate to writing screenplays or directing.

I was going to reply that "she doesn't know how to write books either!" except maybe her latest, the Galbraith one, "The Cuckoo's Calling"?, that might show that she's an adequate writer when it comes to one wholly self-contained work. Rather than the HP series, which she never planned in advance and couldn't finish (properly).

(I haven't read her latest, but I gather it got good reviews - for an effort by a first-time author. :-))

So maybe she will be okay at writing a screenplay for a single movie. Or, if it's going to be a series, she might be competent if the amount of actual story arc is minimal (which is likely to be the case for this special effects extravaganza).
