Magical Magic Creature Spotlight: Dragon: Norwegian Ridgeback
Race #6
Norwegian Ridgeback
(which Harry has crossed out and replaced with “Baby Norbert”)
This dragon mostly looks like a Horntail except that it has, well, black ridges on its back instead of bronze tail spikes. It’s also especially aggressive to its own kind, which keeps its numbers low. Maybe Hagrid’s worries that the other dragons would be mean to Norbert(a) did have some basis in truth, after all?
Anyway, the Ridgeback stands out in that it sometimes eats water-dwelling animals, such as whales. Young Ridgebacks develop fire-breathing abilities earlier than in other species (the book says one to three months, but I can’t be sure if that’s supported by PS/SS).

I wonder if this is just coincidence, or if JKR had read Six Bullerby Children before she wrote this – because there is this chapter where one of the boys, Bosse, acquires an egg, and then gives the chicken that hatches the name Albert, but after it becomes obvioust that it is a hen, he renames it Alberta (or maybe Albertina, I'm not sure. :))
