I had to think about why Slughorn's sycophancy (sp?) bugs me in a Slytherin. While Slytherins can kiss up with the best of them, the operative word is "up". They go for the alpha and groom him/her. They don't slobber all over people below them in the hierarchy, and they expect a superior to be bracing and incisive. Like Snape and Phineas Nigellus, who I bet was the most popular Headmaster ever with his own House. With Slughorn it's like, dude, have some dignity.
