Instead of running to chase Peter (knowing he'd end up in Azkaban - hence giving the motorbike to Hagrid) Sirius could have arranged to meet with Dumbledore to tell him of the Secret Keeper switch. They could arrange to meet on some hill and Sirius could start by begging not to be killed until he was heard. I guess you need to be a Slytherin to think like that.
Not that would have prevented Dumbles from messing up Harry's childhood anyway.
