Rowling has weird ideas about this kind of thing at times. For example, I still don't understand how taking the House Cup from Slytherin at the end of PS can be read as anything other than a deliberate alienation of Slytherin House, considering how it's written. It makes absolutely no sense to me, and Dumbledore's treatment of Tom is consistent with this and just as mind-boggling to me.
