Albie's Great Mistake with Tom was simple enough--he assumed everyone is as altruistic as he thinks he himself is. So when he showed this kid Power without first teaching him Responsibility, things were set in stone in rather short order.
Yaknow, here's a thought that only just comes to me--do none of the teachers at Hogwarts have children of their own, even grown ones? And doesn't that seem really unspeakably odd that everyone there has no personal, direct experience with raising children?
