Yeah, I think it's as usual not a problem with McGonagall as a character but the reasons we're given for liking her. There's just this obsession with finding characters who are biased towards our narrators and wanting that to mean they're fair. McG doesn't have to be completely unbiased. Her occasional leans towards her own students would probably endear her to them and they can endear her to me--just don't hold her up as a paragon of objectiveness. You got that in Percy and he's considered evil for it.
