Oh, I see no reason to lay it entirely at Rowling's feet. It does stand out since it seems like a memorable scene in the book, so much so that the movie made its version the centerpiece of the entire campaign, and then here's Rowling seeming to literally change canon as if she wished she wrote that scene (when hers is better). But she's got editors who are supposed to watch for this sort of thing. It's surprising that no one at Scholastic remembered this. Though of course Harry as biased narrator comes in here as well. It's easy to believe he'd have changed it in his head.
