"Serious" would be pronounced with a longer sound on the first vowel - seer-ee-us. At least, that's how I pronounce it. "Sirius" would have a shorter sound on the first vowel, but I'm not sure how one would phonetically spell that :/ It's not that different, but they sound different enough not to get them confused. Maybe a Scots accent is a bit less obvious about it.
