Perhaps her inconsistency about the size of the Potter fortune are due to her having ambiguous feelings about her own wealth. She started off as middle class and believing that being ridiculously wealthy is a "bad" thing, and then she became ridiculously wealthy herself, so she has conflicting feelings about whether or not it's good to be so rich that you don't have to work.
