As much as I like Luna, sometimes I have to cringe at JKR's way of characterizing her, like in this chapter. We can't simply have a character who's a little bit geeky or a little bit of a misfit, she has to be totally out there, complete with strange outfits and crackpot theories and no real friends. I see what JKR's trying to do here, but she just goes overboard to the point of Luna being a total caricature. Too bad a character's subtlety is only as good as the author's.
Why am I not surprised we’re told, rather than shown, Harry and Hermione having a funny conversation about whether or not Pince and Filch are in love with each other? Like these two could pull that off. A character's sense of humor is only as good as the author's, too.
Though, "What have you been doing to that book, you depraved boy?" has to be one of my favorite lines in all of HBP.
