Don't worry, JKR does phrasings like this quite a bit. Like this, for example:
She was sitting on the teacher's desk, alone except for a small ring of twitÂtering yellow birds circling her head, which she had clearly just conjured out of midair.
That makes it sound as if Hermione conjured her head out of thin air, not the birds.
