Yeah, pretty much. I can't imagine many Potterverse mothers not doing this, including Alice (although from the way JKR's mentioned it in the books and interviews, I guess it's a valid question), Narcissa and Petunia.
I just don't get the glorification. I mean, yeah, it's a wonderful thing to offer up one's own life to save another, but the way it's described is the only way that Lily could have saved her own life is to have essentially killed Harry by handing him to Voldemort - it's not like she jumped into a river or ran into a burning building, from a position of safety. It's like congratulating a parent for trying to keep their child buoyant while they both drowned, rather than letting the kid sink and swimming one's self to the surface. It's heroic and all, but really, who would even consider the latter?
