Magical Magic Creature Spotlight: Doxy
Aug. 7th, 2011 05:43 pmAlright, after the buckets and buckets of fail in the last installment this one’s a bit better. Nothing offensive about it, although it isn't very well thought out.
Doxy
MOM Classification: XXX
A fairy-like creature covered with black fur that has extra arms and legs. Doxies are found in cold climates throughout Europe and North America (gee, I wonder if that means there’s some around my school:P). They have venomous fangs, of course, and the book states that antidotes need to be taken if bitten. I wonder what’s in the antidotes? Is it some sort of antivenin, or is it more like a Pokemon’s magical Antidote?
Incidentally, you may recall Doxies making an appearance in OotP, and Fred and George using the venom in their enchanted candies.
The book claims that Doxies are “quite a separate species” from Fairies. What does that mean? Just how does magical taxonomy work? Clearly wizards don’t use binomial nomenclature (and I’m not sure if Rowling even knows what that means) so just how are these creatures classified? They’re not grouped into families and overall seem a lot like Pokemon in that they seem able to look like and do just about anything (trust me on this one). The thing is, even Pokemon have structured classification systems, so what do people do about all these magical creatures? This really should have been better explained.

Incidentally, next we look at DRAGONS! Get excited, everyone!!
