I don't want to debate it, but since you replied to my comment with the observation, it did seem directed at me personally. I'm glad to hear it wasn't. I do think most slashers don't ignore canon, any more than most het fic fans do. As for me, I like and write both slash and het pairings.
Snape did tell Draco to run, but in a more 'get the hell out of here!' way than by giving him directions. Like I said, Draco could be with Snape: it's just that it's also plausible he might not be, since he got away first and as far as we know didn't arrange a rendez-vous.
I certainly think you do have a point about Draco staying to defend his mother: he might well decide to do so. On the other hand, Narcissa as Lucius' wife hasn't had to take any flak yet, and you'd think Voldemort might turn on her rather than a kid who must be less powerful and thus presumably less helpful. It's possible that Draco believes Voldemort thinks of Narcissa more as Bellatrix's sister than Lucius' wife. Or possible that Draco thinks his mother is likely to keep her head down and thus stay safe unless she is protecting her son. In HBP after all it is Narcissa's concern for Draco that makes her go to Snape, clearly atypical behaviour that horrifies Bellatrix. I think it's also plausible to suggest that Draco would think staying far away from his mother would be best for her.
