Well, it does go along with the old-fashioned notion that men have agency in choosing their wives but women are supposed to be "given to" a husband since they are property. Which I guess fits in with the idea that wizarding culture is old-fashioned, except that Rowling is quick to insist that women in wizarding culture are LESS limited than women in non-magic culture, at least for the time period they act.
