So, does that mean that Tom Riddle wasn't really the "best student" of his year either? Even though Albus himself called Tom Riddle the most brilliant student that Hogwarts has ever had? Is Hermione not really the "best student" either? Or were they still the best, but it's not high praise because the teaching curriculum of Hogwarts isn't the greatest?
Given Rowling's carelessness as a writer, I think it's just something she threw in there to emphasize the importance of a particular character. I once heard something similar about the Bible. This person said when somebody is referred to as "born of a virgin," that's not meant to be taken literally. It's just a Middle Eastern way of saying, "This person is really important. Pay attention to him."
Isn't that what Voldemort tried to do? Didn't Albus essentially accuse him of wanting to recruit his own private army of schoolchildren when Tom came in for an interview for the DADA post? And Tom never tried for the Minister of Magic post either, probably for the same reasons.
There are two more fine examples of IOKWAGDI, but INOKWASDI.
