Thanks for seeing what else does not add up in this story. I was just trying to keep the bad guys consistent and not-totally-stupid. But I agree, Crouch should have mentioned how badly the Longbottoms were harmed. Unless their condition was so humiliating it was unmentionable. It's the usual problem with Rowling's writing: It was so important for her to have Dumbles be the one to tell Harry about the outcome that she didn't let Crouch say the most natural thing just a few pages earlier.
