it wasn’t Harry’s fault he was flying, because Malfoy flew first.

Better buy Malfoy a broom, too!

I wonder if the thought wasn’t so much, "Oh no, I’ve provoked Harry Potter without the goons that protect me in my cowardice," so much as, "Save my neck? I haven’t actually done anything to this kid and after glaring at me all through class he’s just waiting for an excuse to beat me up! He really would kill me!"

I haven’t reread this in forever, but I always imagined it as Harry’s leaning/reaching towards Malfoy to get the Remembrall, and Malfoy’s chicken because he thinks Harry’s going to hurt him, like in the match in COS; but he’s aiming the fucking broom at Malfoy like a javelin! WTF? (And it’s not even because he’s out-of-control, since Harry’s such an idiot savant when it comes to flying.) Wow, and they said him being a psycho in HBP was totally OOC.

Harry’s heard the twins complaining about the school brooms, which don’t fly right.

Ah, Twins, ‘bad workmen’ and ‘blames tools’ come to mind. If I didn’t know their lust for blood and Weasley genes made them awesome, I’d totally doubt their flying here, because that sounds like the sort of pussy whining that would come from the other houses.
This is the part that makes it fair about the Nimbuses right? Because Hogwarts is a inner-city comprehensive wirh damaged equipment? After playing on those shitty brooms, it’s all the kids can do to gobble down a banquet off their gold plates and throw themselves, sobbing, onto a four poster bed.
Of course, crappy school brooms are all the Slytherins next year deserve, and don’t you forget it! Nerve of those uppity assholes, thinking they can muscle in on Harry’s privileged turf…

Err…not that Hagrid’s life is in any way something to look down upon! Unless you’re that bigot Malfoy.

I like that he sees himself ‘stumping around’ (heh, that dramatic flourish there is worthy of Malfoy, and almost makes me like Harry a little bit. Almost.) while Ron etc. become wizards. The sidekick may overtake the master, here!

I’m sure he was kicking himself he didn’t have a satin glove to slap Harry with.

In the inexplicable sympathy stakes, I also kinda wonder if Goyle wasn't a bit hurt he's not selected as Malfoy's second. ;)

Malfoy has already learned enough about Harry to know what lure to use to get him in trouble: the chance to beat Draco senseless.

I thought he meant 'beat' as in best, which I'm sure is meant to show what a huge antagonist Draco is and how Harry's so humble he doesn't realise that he always manages to win any arguments they have; but it sort of makes me want to beat Harry senseless.
I mean, sure, I just got let off punishment for breaking the rules, awarded a shiny new broom and talent by the author, and get to play on the team, exactly what Malfoy wanted from the beginning; plus everyone thinks I'm great; but where's the, you know, glory? I need fist-to-nose contact to really feel good about this.

I like that Hermione’s hissing at them like an angry goose.

I miss PS!Hermione, she's cute.

She’s worried about flying because it’s not something you can memorize out of a book.

I'm sort of surprised we don't have an Obligatory Muggleborn Flying Ace. Maybe some things are in the blood...
