It had not occurred to me before, but Dumbledore’s refusal to meet Harry’s eyes for an entire year must mean that he realizes he’s nothing like as good at Occlumency as Snape, who meets Voldie face-to-face on numerous occasions and manages to keep all his secrets. No wonder it was Snape rather than Dumbledore who had to give Harry Occlumency lessons.
But of course Dumbles of the Giant Ego couldn’t explain: “Professor Snape has to teach you because I never had much of a knack for Occlumency myself. Despite my astounding power and wisdom, I’m not good at everything.” Or have Sirius explain, since he couldn’t speak to Harry himself without his mind leaking like a sieve: “You have to learn Occlumency from Snivellus because that slimy Slytherin is actually good at it, unlike Dumbledore, who is a noble, honest Gryffindor like you and me.” (That noise you hear is me snorting with laughter.)
