See the case of the Meitiv family - the aprents were investigated for neglect because they let their kids walk home for about amile or so.
It's worse than that. They were allowed to walk three blocks alone, from the local park to their house. The kids are six and ten. Not surprisingly, the parents are immigrants, so they haven't been infected by American paranoia about child safety.
When I was five, I walked half a mile to and from school alone. I feel sorry for modern kids. They have all this great technology, but they lack the freedom we had. BTW, the Daily Show did a segment on "free-range parenting" one day this week.
