Snape went to Dumbledore because he was afraid for Lily, but he was giving warning that the entire family was being targeted. The obvious reaction to expect from Dumbles was, “Two of my sworn fighters are going to be attacked because Voldemort sees their child as a threat. Thanks to your warning, I can act to protect them at once,” not “I’ll ignore your warning, you disgusting traitor, and let my own people die unless you offer some sort of payment, preferrably life-long enslavement.”
By asking a favor of the Dark Lord, Snape might have saved Lily alone; by going to Dumbledore, he was taking action to save the entire family, even though his personal concern was for Lily. If he had truly wanted Lily alive and the other two dead, he could have just trusted to Volders, and hoped for the best.
