I mean, what do they do? Are they the equivalent of policemen? They 'catch dark wizards', and then what? Give them a fair trial, or just use the Unforgivables they've been authorised to?
They seem to be the equivalent of both police and army ( why, just like in a real Banana Republic)in that they have the power to use weapons, arrest anybody, throw any body in jail and not be accountable. You may remember, by the way, it was Aurors who threw Sirius Black into prison without even the benefit of Veritserum.
