I am sorry you've gotten no responses on this yet. It's brilliant! As you know, I'm in a wizard rock band. (We are goblins--or pretend to be. :)) And, in one of my songs, I take a look at wealth acquisition in the Wizarding World.
The song's called "Cursebreaker for Gringotts", and we point out that the curse breakers are, in essence, grave robbers. That totally fits in with the picture of racism, extreme privilege, and parasitism that you get from the books, doesn't it?
Anyway, that's where a lot of Goblin gold comes from. Ancient Muggle cultures whose tombs have been robbed.
