There is one big downside for having Dumbles as Secret Keeper: He is old. He was 100 by the time the Secret Keeper issue came up. Since DH we know that death of the Secret Keeper turns all the Secret Knowers into Secret Keepers, so if Dumbles were to die of old age or some health problem any of the 4 (Sirius, Peter, James, Lily) could reveal the Secret (and possibly also Bathilda, and who knows who else). And he did not share this tidbit with the Marauders, or else Sirus' claim that Peter should have died rather than deliver the Secret to Voldie makes no sense.
