I think Riddle made use of Dementors in some capacity. Why go through all the steps when you can have a demon do it for you?
I'm also thinking that Harry is not a horcrux. He holds a secret inside his soul. The question is, who is his secret keeper? Who did Lily trust more than her own husband?
