Exactly. It seems to be a lot more complicated than what we've been led to believe here. Then again, it is a child talking. He'd have been given the easiest (and easiest to dismiss) explanation.
Personally ? I think there may be historical events that have aggravated the prejudice as well as a very visceral fear. I mean, seeing as the muggleborn kids first learn to deal with their magic by themselves, that they are sort of little magical savages -- I could see why they'd be scary to some. And then I'm sure myths have been constructed around the nature and conduct of the muggleborn as well.
