Oh yeah, I get that the idea is that he's vain etc. It's not the joke I don't understand. But the use of curlers and a hair net implies the need to curl one's hair and put it in a net, which I don't think a portrait would have to do, being that your hair would be painted curly--and presumably he'd have to find painted curlers and a hairnet in another painting (or have it painted into his own) as well.
