Harry's crush on Cho has got, like, nothing whatsoever to do with Cho and everything to do with whether Cho likes Harry. Which is just too funny because he's totally taking the girl's traditional role: Do you think she likes me? She's come over to talk to me twice. Maybe next time she'll ask me out!
Maybe that's why his relationship with Princess Gin Gin the Ever So Warm And Compassionate is a "success". They take on traditional gender roles and Harry gets to have his cake and eat it too. However, both relationships show how hideously shallow and self-centred he is.
I've been reading previous recaps in this comm and there was this bit in the PS comments about the moments when us readers started to get a whiff how how dodgy some of the stuff in the books were. I think [livejournal.com profile] baeraad (sp?) said that for him it was when he read the "And that's why you should never go for looks alone!" line in GoF while Anonymous "L" said it was when Arthur told Percy not to talk badly about Bagman because Arthur smoothes over his brother's crimes for bribes like the Quidditch tickets. For me, the first time I had serious issues with the books was when I read about Harry/Cho and felt that the blame was placed on Cho for having personal problems and Harry seemed liked a real dick. I didn't pay too much attention because the first time I read OotP I was semi-delirious and later thought that Harry would develop into a more mature perspective but then HBP came along.

...If they had a headmaster who actually ran a school instead of made up stupid plans to save the world in his office.
My favourite line! This could be a great comedic idea.

I love the wonderful little defense of Fake!Moody...It's not that the kids shouldn't admit they learned a lot, but I genuinely think most if not all of them are incapable of re-thinking last year's class with this new information and wondering just what they might have been learning.
I thought it was amusingly telling of how these guys operate, but besides what you said on the inabilty of re-thinking with new information, it was also on a narrative standpoint showing how JKR's previous ideas on plot threads don't always follow logically, often missing out on subtleties of previous matters or big honking details. Like I said before, the rot of HBP-DH began in OotP because stuff was thrown in randomly then dropped except that it wasn't so obvious in the start because there was still optimism that stuff will be dealt with properly in the end.

This is why they probably *need* just this sort of class in theory and law, to think about what they're doing instead of just finding out how cool it is to hex people who presumably deserve it because why would they be hexing them if they didn't?
The magical folks desperately need some sort of ethics class but I guess the fact that the closest thing to this idea came from the incredibly evil bureacracy is very telling of JKR's/WW's priorities (or it could be that I'm just evil - that wouldn't be too much of a surprise ;D)

Umbridge plays Harry like a fiddle and he performs on cue. I note Seamus is listening avidly to Harry's words about what happened in the graveyard, now that he's finally gotten to hear it. Seamus=first wizard ever to try to ascertain objective truth.
Isn't it just so sad that after awhile of reading the HARRY POTTER books all I wanted at the end was for a new protagonist? This issue just makes me very depressed about the purpose of Zacharias Smith and how he was treated at the end. (Now he was a brave, if rather agressively annoying person who searches for the truth and questioned authority! - I find it hilarious that some people think that from the info on him in Bk5 (not necessarily the later books where things change) he should have been in Slytherin when it was obvious that he possessed the good and bad of Gryffindor).

I am beginning to suspect Hermione stands over the authorial voice with a whip demanding plugs for herself every page or so.
Lol! I can actually imagine this, which makes me think that there are a lot of proud characters who are being FAR too lenient with JKR giving them outrageously biased bad press.
