Oh, and yes about the make-ups. Some of my least favorite moments in the series is where JKR creates a believable conflict and then sweeps it under the carpet with something that doesn't address any of the issues. Starting with Hermione becoming friends with Harry and Ron because they fought a troll together. Fine if that's the catalyst, but it only "solves" things in outline form.
