Ha! I still misspell it if I don't check and I'm sure I'm pronouncing it wrong, too.
ETA: Seriously, how bizarre is it that Hotheaded Sirius *never* brings up Lily in his fight with Snape here? As long as they're hitting below the belt, after all. It's like somebody put a jinx on them to never speak of her.
Yet more evidence for the theory that Snape and Lily weren't really friends once they got to Hogwarts. Sirius probably has no idea Lily was important to Snape at all. In which case it makes sense not to bring her up - as far as he knows they had nothing to do with each other.
Sirius’ gift seems like a handy way of getting in touch without being seen. Is there a reason they didn’t use it before?
That gift is pretty much the only time I felt sympathy for Sirius in this book. Mostly because it shows how little attention Harry pays to the people he supposedly cares about. I actually feel bad for Sirius, being stuck in that house, probably hoping that Harry will contact him now that it would be so easy - and Harry couldn't even be bothered to open it up to see what it was. Perhaps he instinctively knew it would result in more angst this way.
I can’t help thinking if I were him I’d probably be kind of excited about learning a new, cool form of magic.
This is why one of the first things Harry does in many AU fics is learn Occlumency either on his own or by finding a teacher - it's one of the most useful, interesting forms of magic in the books! Of course, Book!Harry doesn't want to hide his thoughts like a sneaky Slytherin - he wants to LOUDLY DECLARE THEM FOR ALL THE WORLD TO HEAR, like a true Gryffindor.
