More to the point; we've just identified another post 3-year summer personality exchange. It wasn't just Ginny.
Rowling boasts of not rereading her own work. She remembers Sirius acting fairly nuts in PoA, and much better in GoF (although she's contradicted just about everything he told us in Book 4 since then), but in OotP she needed him to be nuts again.
Only, she didn't bother to make sure that he was the same kind of crazy, of a kind of crazy that could really be extrapolated from it.
Although he was drinking the cellar dry, and he *did* act like a not very funny drunk. One of the few cases in which she *hasn't* played drunkeness for laughs.
