I am fond of the idea that Albus Dumbledore is looking at a picture much bigger than anyone else and has in fact been pulling a lot of strings for a very long time. After all, he always knows what's going on, and yet he won't give over those precious details, will he? So yeah, maybe he engineered Tom into Voldemort. I can't imagine why, but I reckon some super-secret about Albus will be discovered in the last book. Some family background thing - look out for the Aberforth Dumbledore speaking part!
