I wish I could figure out some throughline to make sense of when Hermione is bad at this. I mean, she chokes in PS when she's sent to the teacher's lounge for whatever reason it was. But as you say, at other times she's downright great at this sort of thing. I wouldn't have been surprised if she went in and did a perfect imitation of Pansy Parkinson and had Borgin eating out of her hand.
