I'd never heard that! The editor's certainly making him/herself useful there in pointing out that your pet doing anything on the field doesn't actually count as you doing it. Even by the bizarre rules of Quidditch Hedwig catching the Snitch would just be interference.
Though I'm glad Hedwig was spared having to develop an interest in sports to show how much she loved Harry.
