LOL! OMG, it all makes sense now. Snape just imprinted on her and there was nothing he could do--and Dumbledore knew it, so of course he trusted Snape.
And he was confused because I think in the Twilight book it's implied the girl will then fall in love with her protector, and when asked whether she gets any choice the answer is that of course she does--but why wouldn't she choose him?
