Just wanted to note: we never actually were told that Nott didn't follow the Slytherin herd. JKR just put her little paragraph description of him up on the website to explain who he was for the one scene he was going to actually be in, which was mostly about showing a contrast b/w Harry's life and Draco's, and explaining to us just what the DE children had heard about Harry. He was a loner who didn't "feel the need to join gangs" presumably to explain why he wasn't always with Draco even though they were both DE kids.
So long story short, I don't think she ever really intended to imply he was anti-DE. Fandom just took it that way hoping for a Great Hope for Slytherin.
