Perhaps Dumbledore was counting on Snape doing something to show the Order he was still on their side?
In fact Dumbledore tells Severus that if he has to participate in the chase he has to avoid letting his loyalties become known. But feeling like he could have killed Harry would have shaken him pretty badly.
