JKR kind of mocks the Gryffindor ethos with McLaggen at least (didn't he miss the last Quidditch auditions being hospitalised for swallowing something dangerous on a bet?) she just seems to be implying that this is one of the lucky students who aren't forced to use their bravery in more productive ways, sniff sob. Except Harry, for example, has been hospitalised for Quidditch injuries as many times if not more, than he has for fighting evil.
